The conventional fear was straightforward: AI would commoditize knowledge work the same way industrial machines commoditized manual labor. Lawyers, doctors, consultants, engineers — anyone whose value came from knowing things rather than doing things — would be displaced as AI systems learned to know those same things faster and cheaper.
It's a coherent theory. It's also, so far, wrong in a specific and interesting way.
What AI has actually done is flood the information layer of the economy with plausible, fluent, well-structured output that is very difficult to verify. The quantity of content, analysis, and advice available to anyone with an internet connection has increased by an order of magnitude. The quality of that output — where quality means reliably correct and applicable to your specific situation — has not increased at the same rate. In many domains, it's gotten harder to assess, not easier.
This creates a paradox. As AI generates more information, the ability to evaluate that information becomes more valuable. And the ability to evaluate information in a domain requires the very expertise that AI was supposed to replace. You need to know enough to know when the AI is wrong. That's a non-trivial bar.
Consider what's happened in medicine. AI diagnostic tools have become genuinely impressive — they can read imaging, flag anomalies, and surface differential diagnoses with accuracy that rivals or exceeds average practitioners in controlled settings. And yet the demand for expert physician judgment hasn't collapsed. If anything, patients are arriving at appointments with more questions, more printouts, more AI-generated summaries to validate. The AI created demand for a human to interpret what it produced.
The same pattern is appearing in law, finance, engineering, and every other field where AI can generate a plausible answer. The plausible answer requires a human expert to verify. The verification requires more expertise, not less. The AI doesn't eliminate the need for human judgment — it elevates it to the role of final arbiter.
There's also a second paradox operating here. As AI makes basic information retrieval trivially easy, the economic value of information that can't be retrieved — the tacit knowledge, the judgment calls, the "I've seen this situation before and here's what usually happens next" — increases relative to everything else. The things that AI does well get priced toward zero. The things AI can't do hold their value or appreciate.
What AI genuinely cannot do is replace the value of having been wrong a hundred times in a specific domain and updating accordingly. That's not a data problem. You can't scrape the internet and train your way to the intuition that comes from a decade of actual practice. It's irreproducibly human.
This is the paradox: the technology that was supposed to make experts obsolete has instead clarified exactly what makes expertise irreplaceable. For people who actually know things deeply — not just have access to information about them — the economic moment is unusually favorable.
The question is whether they're positioned to capture that value. Traditionally, expertise has been locked behind hourly billing, retainer agreements, and geographic constraints. The opportunity right now is to make that expertise more accessible and more scalable — not by watering it down, but by packaging it more effectively.
